Michael Walker  > Europe > Slovenia > Julian Alps and Soca River, Slovenia, August 2012
I left Bled early in the morning and headed for the Vrisc Pass over the Julian Alps. The road through the pass was built during World War I by Russian prisoners and is known as the Russian Road. Descending the opposite side of the pass I headed into the Soca River valley. The Soca River is crystal clear and the blue green color of an old glass Coke bottle. After a long day of exploring I spent the night in the little town of Bovec. The next morning I headed back towards the pass stopping along the way to visit a WWI cemetery, get some more photos of the spectacular scenery and some shots of typical Slovenian hayracks. These hayracks are a signature of the Slovenian countryside and are protected.

Russian prisoners of war built the road through the pass.
Many of the prisoners died and are buried on the grounds of this tiny chapel.
The are 49 switchbacks on the pass.
Happy Slovenian cows with real cowbells!
Cyclists take a well earned break at the top of the pass.
